Xyloproct is an ointment containing two active ingredients: lidocaine and hydrocortisone. Lidocaine is a type of medicine known as a local anaesthetic and hydrocortisone is classed as a corticosteroid. Xyloproct is used to relieve itching around the back passage or female genitals and ease symptoms of haemorrhoids (piles) and related problems in this area.
How Xyloproct treats haemorrhoids
Each gram of Xyloproct contains 50mg of lidocaine and 2.75mg of hydrocortisone. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic – this means it numbs the area where you’ve used it by stopping the nerves from sending pain signals to your brain. Hydrocortisone is a type of medicine called a topical corticosteroid, which works by suppressing inflammation in the affected area.
 
Directions
You should always use Xyloproct exactly how your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist has instructed you to – you will be told exactly how much ointment to use depending on your condition. Xyloproct should usually be put on the affected area several times a day and up to 6g of the ointment (a third of a tube) can be used each day. This medicine is for short-term use only; longer periods of treatments can last up to 3 weeks, but you may need to take a break.
Xyloproct comes with an applicator that can be used if the ointment needs to be applied inside the back passage – make sure to thoroughly clean this applicator after each use. You must be careful not to put too much ointment into the back passage, particularly if the patient is a child.
 
Side Effects
As with all medicines, Xyloproct comes with the possibility of side effects. Fortunately, these won’t affect everyone. If you have any signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face, shortness of breath) stop taking Xyloproct immediately and seek immediate medical attention.
Xyloproct can cause redness swelling and itching where it has been applied. You should stop using Xyloproct and contact your doctor if you notice any new soreness or bleeding in your back passage.
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
 
Warnings
This medicine will usually be safe and suitable for most adults and children, however, you must not use Xyloproct ointment if: 

You are allergic to lidocaine, hydrocortisone or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
You have ever had an allergic reaction to other local anaesthetics or to other corticosteroid medicines.
You have an infection where the ointment is going to be put and the infection is not being treated. 
You are taking medicines for an uneven heartbeat (such as amiodarone or sotalol) whilst you aren’t in hospital.

You should speak to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for expert advice before using Xyloproct ointment if: 

You are taking any other medicines or herbal remedies, including those obtained without a prescription
Your skin is very thin or fragile where the ointment is going to be put.
You have an infection where the ointment is going to be put.
You or any of your family have ever been told that you have a rare disease of the blood pigment called ‘porphyria’. 

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, trying to have a baby or are breastfeeding, you should speak to a Chemist4U pharmacist before taking Xyloproct to make sure they’re right for you and your baby.
Age Restrictions
Xyloproct is suitable for both adults and children of all ages. You should always follow your doctor or pharmacist’s advice when these tablets are prescribed to you or your child.
 
Storage
Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use Dymista after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Once opened, dispose of this medicine after 6 months.
