Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets are a treatment for congestion that can help you to manage other cold and flu symptoms. They use 3 active ingredients to treat your symptoms, helping to clear your blocked nose, relieve pain, and loosen phlegm. What is congestion?
Congestion is a common symptom of a cold or the flu. It makes your nose feel blocked and runny, making it more difficult for you to breathe and disrupting your sense of smell. Congestion is caused by swelling of the blood vessels in your nasal passages, reducing the amount of space in your nose, making it easier for mucus to build up and block your airways. When you’re congested, you may also experience a headache as the blockage in your nose puts pressure on your sinuses. Congestion will usually pass by itself, but a decongestant can help to reduce the swelling in your nose to help you breathe easy.

How will Sudafed Mucus Relief ease my congestion?
Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets contain three active ingredients which work together to relieve congestion and other cold and flu symptoms. The first is 250mg of paracetamol, a popular pain relief medication which can also help to bring down a high temperature. The second is 100mg of guaifenesin, an expectorant which helps to loosen phlegm, making it easier to cough up so you can clear your airways. The final ingredient is 5mg of phenylephrine, a decongestant which helps to reduce the swelling in your nasal passages, making it easier for you to breathe and easing congestion.

Can I take these decongestants if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product. Some medications are not suitable for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as traces of the active ingredients can be passed on to your baby. A medical professional will be able to recommend a suitable treatment for you.

Can I take these tablets at the same time as my other medication?
If you’re taking any other medication you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets. This especially applies if you are already taking:

Medicines to treat high cholesterol levels, e.g. cholestyramine

Anti-sickness medications, e.g. metoclopramide, domperidone

Blood thinners, also known as anticoagulants, e.g. warfarin or other coumarins

Barbiturates, which are used for epilepsy or to help you sleep, e.g. phenobarbitones

Tyicyclic antidepressants, e.t. imipramine, amitriptyline

Medicines to treat heart or circulatory problems, or to lower blood pressure, e.g. digoxin, guanethidine, reserpine, methyldopa

Aspirin or any other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen

Medicines to treat migraines, e.g. ergotamine, methylsergide

Zidovudine, as this may cause blood problems such as low white blood cell count

Beta blockers such as atenolol or vasodilators such as hydralazine

Phenothiazines used as sedatives, e.g. chlorpromazine, pericyazine, fluphenazine

Any other cold and flu medicines

Any other medicines which contain paracetamol

Can I drive after taking Sudafed Mucus Relief?
Sudafed Mucus Relief can make you feel drowsy or dizzy after use. If this happens to you, you should not attempt to drive or use any tools or machinery until you’re absolutely sure the symptoms have passed and you’re safe to do so.

Can I drink alcohol while I’m taking this decongestant?
You should not drink alcohol while taking Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets or any other decongestants. Alcohol can increase the drowsy effects of decongestants, so they shouldn’t be taken together.

How to take these tablets
Take 2 Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets every 4 hours, as needed. Do not take more than 8 tablets in 24 hours. Swallow the tablets whole with a sip of water or another cool drink.

When should this product not be used?
Sudafed Mucus Relief is not suitable for use in children under the age of 12. Do not take this product if you are allergic to paracetamol, guaifenesin, phenylephrine, or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not take this product if you have:

A serious heart condition

High blood pressure

Diabetes

An overactive thyroid

Glaucoma, including closed angle glaucoma

An enlarged prostate

Difficulty passing urine

You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you have:

Liver or kidney problems, including alcoholic liver disease

Phaeochromocytoma (an adrenal gland tumour)

A very bad cough or asthma, a fever, rash, or headache which won’t go away

 Circulatory disorders, such as Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Angina

Stomach or intestinal problems

Phenylketonuria, a rare, inherited metabolic disorder

Does Sudafed Mucus Relief have any side effects?
Like all medications, Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These side effects include:

Allergic reactions, which may be severe, e.g. skin rash, peeling, itching, swollen red skin, shortness of breath, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face

Stomach upsets

Tingling or coolness of the skin

Faster or slower heartbeat

Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

Nervousness, tremors, or convulsions

Rise in body temperature

Rise in blood pressure with headache, being sick, and irregular heartbeat

Being more prone to bleeding, bruising, fever, and infections

How to store this product
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Do not take this product if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
