Saxenda Weight Loss Pens
Saxenda (liraglutide) is a daily weight loss injection that helps adults with a BMI of 30 or above lose weight by reducing appetite and making you feel fuller for longer. When combined with a low-calorie diet and exercise, Saxenda weight loss pens can help you lose weight and keep it off. It works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which naturally controls hunger. However, the manufacturer plans to phase out Saxenda in favour of Wegovy, a once-weekly injection with greater weight-loss potential. So, if your preferred treatment is currently Saxenda, it might be the ideal time to reconsider your options. For more information on the differences between Wegovy and Saxenda or how to switch to Wegovy from Saxenda, read our guides.

Saxenda vs Wegovy
Both belong to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class of medications. They mimic a naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate appetite and digestion, making you feel fuller and reducing calorie intake. But despite this similarity, they differ in structure, dosing, and outcomes.
Active Ingredients & How They Work
-
Saxenda (liraglutide): A daily injectable that mimics GLP-1 to suppress appetite and slow gastric emptying.
-
Wegovy (semaglutide): A weekly injectable with a longer half-life that also reduces hunger, slows stomach emptying, and has stronger appetite-suppressing effects.
Both affect the hypothalamus (the “hunger centre” of the brain), but semaglutide (Wegovy) stays in the body longer and has a stronger overall effect
| Feature | Wegovy | Saxenda |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Liraglutide |
| Injection frequency | Weekly | Daily |
| Average weight loss | ~15–16% | ~5–8% |
| Side effects | GI symptoms common | GI symptoms common |
| Convenience | Easier (less frequent) | Less convenient (daily) |
| Cost | Similar or higher with private prescriptions | Similar or lower, generics in some markets |
Both Saxenda and Wegovy are evidence-based options for medically managed weight loss. If your goal is maximum weight reduction with a once-weekly regimen, Wegovy typically outperforms Saxenda in clinical studies. Saxenda, however, can still be a valuable option, particularly where coverage or personal preference for daily dosing matters.
