Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) can be used to treat several different things.
Its most popular use is to treat the symptoms of an allergic reaction or hay fever.
This medication can also be used to ease motion sickness or as a short-term remedy for insomnia.
How Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) works
This medication contains the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride. It belongs to a group of medicines known as phenothiazines.
It works by blocking histamine, a substance your body makes when you come into contact with something you are allergic to.
It also works directly on your brain to help you feel more relaxed.
Directions
Always take Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Do not take this medication for more than 7 days.
For allergies:
Children between the ages of 6-10 years old: 1-2 tablets to be given at night or 1 tablet given twice a day. Do not give more than 2 tablets in 24 hours.
Children over 10 years old and adults: 1 tablet should be taken twice a day. You can increase this to 2 tablets 3 times a day if necessary.
For nausea and vomiting (such as motion sickness):
Children between the ages of 6-10 years old: 1 tablet should be taken the night before a journey. If necessary, this can be repeated after 6-8 hours.
Children over 10 years old and adults: 2 tablets should be taken the night before a journey. If necessary, this can be repeated after 6-8 hours.
For short-term use as a treatment for insomnia in adults:
2-5 tablets should be taken as a single dose at night.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Constipation
Difficulty passing urine, especially in the elderly and children
Dizziness
Drowsiness
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Vomiting
Indigestion
Increased sensitivity to the sun
Skin rashes, including itching and red and raised lumps
You must tell your healthcare provider if these symptoms do not go away after a few days.
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
You must stop taking this medication straight away and seek medical treatment immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
Liver problems that may cause the eyes or skin to go yellow (jaundice)
Muscle stiffness or shaking
Unusual movements of the tongue, facial muscle spasms or being unable to control some muscles in the face, rolling eyes and trembling
Very fast, irregular, uneven or forceful heartbeat (palpitations)
General weakness
More frequent infections (particularly throat infections)
Tiredness that lasts for a long time
Overactive behaviour in children
Warnings
Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:
You suffer from severe dizziness
You suffer from drowsiness
You suffer from headaches
The patient is in a coma
Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if:
You have asthma
You have bronchitis
You have epilepsy
You have serious heart problems
You have a personal or family history of heart disease
You have an irregular heartbeat
You have liver problems
You have kidney problems
You have a stomach blockage
You have difficulty passing urine
You have narrow-angle glaucoma
You have or have had Reye’s syndrome
These tablets may affect the results of some tests, such as pregnancy and skin tests. Do not take Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) in the 3 days before a skin test.
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride).
Do not take this medicine if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the last 2 weeks.
Tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:
Anticholinergic medication for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), asthma or a weak bladder
Antipsychotics e.g. haloperidol or quetiapine
Medication for depression e.g. amitriptyline or citalopram
Medicines to help you sleep or feel more relaxed e.g. diazepam or zolpidem
Asprin
Medicines to treat irregular heartbeats e.g. quinidine or amiodarone
Antimicrobials for the treatment of infections e.g. erythromycin or levofloxacin
Age restrictions
This product is not suitable for children under 6 years old.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take these tablets 2 weeks before you are due to give birth. You should not take Phenergan 10mg (Promethazine Hydrochloride) if you are breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication. Alcohol can affect the way this medication works.
Driving and operating machinery
A side effect of this product is drowsiness. If you are affected, do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe enough to do so.
Storage information
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
