Diflucan is an anti-fungal treatment containing the active ingredient fluconazole. This medicine can be used to treat a range of infections caused by fungi, as well as the prevention of candidal infections. The most common cause of fungal infection is a yeast called Candida, which can lead to what’s commonly known as thrush or a yeast infection.
 
How Diflucan treats thrush
Diflucan contains the active ingredient fluconazole, an anti-fungal medicine. Fluconazole works by blocking fungi from being able to reproduce, meaning fungal infections like thrush can be cleared up quickly. This action can also prevent fungal infections from occurring in people who are at a higher risk, or those with recurring thrush. 
 
Directions
The recommended dosage for Diflucan depends on your age and what condition you need to treat. Refer to the table below for the usual doses required for adults, but always follow the specific advice given to you by your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist.

To treat cryptococcal meningitis
400mg on the first day, then 200mg to 400mg once daily for 6 to 8 weeks or longer if needed. Sometimes, doses are increased up to 800mg. 

To stop cryptococcal meningitis from coming back
200mg once daily until your doctor or pharmacist tells you to stop treatment.

To treat coccidioidomycosis
200mg to 400mg once daily from 11 months for up to 24 months or longer if needed. Sometimes, doses are increased up to 800mg.

To treat internal fungal infections caused by Candida
800mg on the first day, then 400mg once a day until your doctor or pharmacist tells you to stop treatment.

To treat mucosal infections affecting the lining of the mouth or throat and denture sore mouth
200mg to 400mg on the first day, then 100mg to 200mg once a day until your doctor or pharmacist tells you to stop.

To treat mucosal thrush (dose depends on where the infection is located)
50mg to 400mg once daily for 7 to 30 days until your doctor or pharmacist tells you to stop treatment.

To stop mucosal infections affecting the lining of the mouth or throat from coming back
100mg to 200mg once daily, or 200mg three times a week, while you are at risk of getting an infection.

To treat genital thrush
150mg as a single dose.

To reduce the recurrence of vaginal thrush
150mg every third day for a total of 3 doses, then once a week for 6 months while you are at risk of getting an infection.

To treat fungal skin and nail infections
Depending on the site of infection, 50mg once daily, 150mg once weekly or 300 to 400mg once weekly for 1-4 weeks. Athlete’s foot may need treatment lasting up to 6 weeks.

To prevent a Candida infection if your immune system is weak
200mg to 400mg once daily, while you are at risk of getting an infection.

 
Side effects
Like all medicines, there is a possibility you may experience some unwanted side effects when taking Diflucan. These are usually mild and they won’t affect everyone. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, skin rash or fainting) or liver problems (tiredness, loss of appetite, vomiting, and/or jaundice – yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes). 
Common side effects that may affect up to 1 in 10 people include:

Headache
Diarrhoea
Feeling or being sick
Increases in blood tests of liver function
Rash

Uncommon side effects that may affect up to 1 in 100 people include: 

Reduction in red blood cells, which can cause paleness, weakness or breathlessness
Decreased appetite
Sleep problems
Drowsiness or dizziness
Seizure
Vertigo
Tingling feeling or numbness
Changes in sense of taste
Constipation, indigestion, or wind
Dry mouth
Muscle pain
Liver damage and yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Hives, itching, or blistering
Increased sweating
Tiredness, general feeling of being unwell or fever

Warnings
Diflucan may not be suitable for some people with underlying health conditions or those who are taking other medicines. You must not take Diflucan if:

You are allergic to fluconazole, to other medicines you have taken to treat fungal infections, or to any of the ingredients in this medicine.
You are taking astemizole or terfenadine (antihistamine medicines for allergies)
You are taking cisapride (used for stomach upsets).
You are taking pimozide (used to treat mental illness).
You are taking quinidine (used to treat heart arrhythmia).
You are taking erythromycin (an antibiotic for treating infections).

You should talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for expert advice before taking Diflucan if:

You are taking any other medicines or herbal remedies, including those obtained without a prescription
You have liver or kidney problems.
You suffer from heart disease, including heart rhythm problems.
You have abnormal levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in your blood.
You develop severe skin reactions (itching, reddening of the skin, or difficulty breathing).
You develop signs of adrenal insufficiency (symptoms include chronic or long-lasting fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and abdominal pain).

 
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning on becoming pregnant, you should not take Diflucan unless your doctor has told you otherwise. You shouldn’t breastfeed if you’re taking a repeated dose of Diflucan, but it’s safe to continue breastfeeding if you’ve only taken a single dose of 150mg. 
 
Age restrictions
Children and adolescents can take Diflucan, but its uses are limited and the recommended dosage will be different depending on their age and condition. Speak to a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for expert advice and always follow the specific dose that has been prescribed.

Storage
Do not store above 30°C and keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use Diflucan after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging.
