Betnovate cream is a topical steroid which can be used to soothe inflammation caused by dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. If your skin is badly irritated or you’re finding that over-the-counter prescriptions aren’t working to ease your flare-ups as effectively as they should, this treatment could help to ease your inflammation and reduce itching. Betnovate can be used in adults and children over the age of 1 and can be used to treat flare-ups in most areas of the body, including the face.
 
How Betnovate relieves eczema or psoriasis
The active ingredient in Betnovate cream is Betamethasone Valerate, which is a topical steroid. When you have a reaction that causes skin inflammation, your body releases hormones into the area which irritate your skin and cause your symptoms. Betamethasone helps relieve inflammation by keeping these hormones from being released, effectively treating your condition at its source and easing symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling.
 
Directions
Before using this product, wash your hands thoroughly. Apply a thin layer of Betnovate cream to the affected area and gently rub it into the skin until it’s absorbed. Use your fingertip to measure the amount of cream you should use. If you are not using this cream to treat the skin on your hands, wash them thoroughly after each application. Apply once or twice a day, reducing the amount of cream you use as your skin gets better. Do not apply to large areas of skin for a long period of time. If you are applying the cream to someone else (e.g. a child) you can use disposable plastic gloves if you feel you need to. If your skin hasn’t improved after 2 – 4 weeks of use you should speak to your doctor. If you have thick patches of psoriasis, your doctor may recommend wearing an airtight dressing over the affected area when you start using the cream. This will usually be at night and can help the cream to be more effective. However, you should only do this if directed to by your doctor. Do not apply this cream to your face unless your doctor tells you to, if you are using it on your face, do not use this treatment for more than 5 days.
 
How much cream to use
The amount of Betnovate cream you should use will differ depending on your age and where you want to use it. You should use your fingertip to measure the amount of cream you’re using, even if you’re measuring the amount of cream to use on a child. The amounts you’ll usually need to use as an adult or to treat a child older than 10 are as follows:

Side effects
Like all medications, Betnovate cream can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Side effects you may experience include:

Burning, pain, irritation, or itching in the area of application

An increased risk of infection

Allergic skin reaction in the area of application

Rash, itchy bumpy skin, skin redness

Thinning or dryness of the skin, it may also damage or wrinkle more easily

Stretch marks

Blood vessels under the skin becoming more noticeable

Hair growth or hair loss increasing or decreasing, changes in skin colour

Weight gain, your face becoming more rounded

Slowing of weight gain or growth in children

Bones becoming thin, weak, or easily breakable

Cataracts or glaucoma

Decreased cortisol in your blood

Increased sugar levels in your blood or pee

High blood pressure

Serious side effects
If you experience any of the following side effects, stop use and seek immediate medical assistance:

Your skin condition gets worse, you get a generalised rash, or your skin becomes swollen during treatment. You may be allergic to Betnovate, have an infection, or need a different treatment

You have psoriasis and get raised bumps with pus under the skin, this is known as pustular psoriasis

 
Warnings
Betnovate cream is not suitable for children under the age of 1. Do not use this product if you are allergic to betamethasone valerate, and other steroids, or any of the other listed ingredients. For use on the skin only. Do not use this product to treat any of the following skin problems:

Acne

Rosacea

A spotty red rash around your mouth, known as perioral dermatitis

Itching around your back passage (anus) or genitals

Infected skin, unless your affection is also being treated with an anti-infective medicine

Itchy skin which is not inflamed

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you:

Are going to be applying this cream underneath an airtight dressing, including a child’s nappy

Have psoriasis

Have a chronic leg ulcer

Are applying the cream to a large surface area

Are applying the cream to broken skin or within skin folds

Are applying the cream near your eyes or on your eyelids

Have a skin infection, as this will need to be treated

Are applying the cream to thin skin, such as the skin on your face, or on children, who have thinner skin than adults. If you need to apply this product to a child or on the face, your treatment should last no longer than 5 days

Are planning to be using bandages, as these should not be used on children or on the face where the cream has been applied

 
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should tell your doctor this during your first consultation. Topical steroids like Betnovate will only be prescribed to you if the benefits will outweigh and potential harm to your baby. Although you will often be able to use this product safely, your doctor will need to know about your condition before they can make a decision about your treatment. If your doctor does prescribe this cream when you’re breastfeeding, make sure to thoroughly wipe away any cream that gets on your breasts before feeding your baby.
 
Other medication
If you’re using any other medication you should tell your doctor about this during your consultation, including any medications you obtained without a prescription and herbal remedies. This especially applies if you are already taking ritonavir (used to treat HIV/AIDS) or itraconazole (used to treat fungal infections like thrush). Some medications shouldn’t be used together so your doctor will need to know every medication you’re using to be able to make an informed decision about your treatment.
 
Fire risk
This product can make fabrics extremely flammable. You should avoid contact with open flames while using this cream and should not smoke. Be sure to change and wash any dressings, bandages, clothes, bedding, or other fabrics which come into contact with this cream regularly. This will help to make the fabrics less flammable, but be aware that it may not remove the cream completely and you should still be careful.
 
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Do not use this product if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
