How Nystatin Oral Suspension works
Nystatin is an antifungal antibiotic that makes holes in the fungus’ cell membrane, causing the contents to leak.
Directions
Always take Nystatin Oral Suspension exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Shake the bottle well before use. You must hold the solution in your mouth for as long as possible. Swallow or spit the product out, depending on the advice of your healthcare provider.
For mouth infections caused by Candida albicans (oral thrush): 1ml, 4 times a day.
Denture sores: 1ml, 4 times a day.
Gut infections in adults: 5ml, 4 times a day.
Gut infections in children: 1ml, 4 times a day.
Preventing thrush or candidal infections in adults: 10ml a day to be taken alongside other antibiotics.
Preventing thrush or candidal infectious in newborns: 1ml, once a day.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Nystatin Oral Suspension may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects may include:
Sickness and diarrhoea
Bloating and stomach cramps
Indigestion
Mouth irritation
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
If you notice the following side effects, stop taking this medication and speak to your healthcare provider immediately:
A cough accompanied by headaches, fever, aches, sickness, diarrhoea, a rash and blisters. These are symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Warnings
Nystatin Oral Suspension may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have a fungal infection in the lungs.
Talk to your doctor before taking this product if you have diabetes or a controlled sodium diet.
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Food and drink
Do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after taking this product.
Storage information
Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
