What is Nurofen for Children aged 7-12?
Nurofen for Children is a pain relief medication designed for children aged 7-12. It’s twice the strength of other Nurofen for Children formulas, making it ideal for older children who need high doses of pain relief. This product comes in two delicious flavours: strawberry and orange. The handy measuring spoon ensures accurate dosage.
 
What pain can this medicine be used to treat?
Nurofen for Children can be used to treat the following aches and pains:

Rheumatic pain (aches and pains in joints)
Muscular pain
Headache
Dental pain
Fever
Cold and flu symptoms.

 
How does Nurofen for Children help to ease pain?
This oral suspension contains 200mg of ibuprofen per 5ml of liquid. Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), which change how the body responds to pain and high body temperature helping to relieve aches, pains and fever symptoms.
 
How to take Nurofen Liquid Medicine.
Shake the bottle well before each use. Following the guide on the product leaflet, use the measuring spoon provided to measure out the correct dose for your child. Ensure you wash the spoon and replace the cap on the bottle after each use.
Nurofen for Children Dosage

Children aged 7-9: One 5ml dose up to 3 times a day with at leaving at least 4 hours between each dose.
Children aged 10-12: One 7.5 ml dose up to 3 times a day with at least 4 hours between each dose.

 
Using Nurofen for Children with other medications.
This medication can affect or be affected by other medicine. Always seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist 4 U pharmacist before giving this medicine to your child if they’re taking other medication.
Speak to your doctor before using Nurofen for Children, if your child is taking:

Anticoagulants (medicines that thin the blood/prevent clotting, e.g. aspirin).
Medicines that reduce high blood pressure (e.g. beta-blockers, captopril, losartan).
Other NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors.
Digoxin (for heart insufficiency).
Glucocorticoids containing cortisone (can increase the risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding).
Anti-platelet medicines (can increase the risk of bleeding)
Aspirin
Phenytoin, which is used to treat epilepsy
SSRIs, which are used for depression
Lithium, which is used for depression
Probenecid and sulfinpyrazones, which are used for gout
Medicines for high blood pressure or water tablets
Potassium-sparing diuretics, e.g. amiloride
Methotrexate, which is used to treat cancer
Tacrolimus or cyclosporine, which are immunosuppressive medications
Zidovudine, which is used to treat HIV or AIDs
Sulfonylureas, which are used for diabetes
Quinolone antibiotics
Voriconazole or fluconazole, which are used for fungal infections
Baclofen
Ritonavir
Aminoglycosides

 
Taking Nurofen with Calpol.
Calpol products usually contain paracetamol, whilst Nurofen’s active ingredient is Ibuprofen. As these products use different active ingredients, your child may be able to take them together. Always seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist 4 U pharmacist before giving this combination of medicines to your child.
 
Is this medicine suitable for adults? 
Adults can take Nurofen for Children, but a remedy designed for adults may be more suitable for you. Only take this product on a doctor or pharmacist’s recommendation. Read the patient information leaflet included with this product before use as there are additional warnings that should be taken into consideration before using this medicine. Do NOT take this product if you’re in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
 
When should Nurofen for Children NOT be used? 
This particular strength of Nurofen liquid medicine is not suitable for children younger than 7 years of age or weigh less than 20kg (3.14 stone/44 pounds). Do not give this product to your child if they are allergic to:

The active ingredient- Ibuprofen
Other NSAID painkillers (e.g. aspirin)
Any of the other listed ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list).

Do NOT give this product to your child id they have:

Suffered from shortness of breath, asthma, a runny nose, swelling on hands or face or hives after using Aspirin or other NSAID medication.
Gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to taking NSAIDs.
Recurrent stomach ulcers/duodenal ulcers or bleeding, either currently or in the past.
Severe liver or kidney failure.
Severe heart failure.
Bleeding on the brain or another active bleeding.
Unclarified blood-formation disturbances.
Severe dehydration (caused by vomiting, diarrhoea or insufficient fluid intake).
Chickenpox

Speak to your doctor or a Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this medicine if your child:

Has hereditary blood formation disorders (e.g. acute intermittent porphyria).
Coagulation disturbances.
Certain skin diseases (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus)
Has or had a bowel disease.
Has or had high blood pressure/heart failure.
Has a reduced kidney function.
Has liver disorders.
Taking medications that could increase the risk of ulceration or bleeding.
Is taking another NSAID medicine.
Suffers from hayfever, nasal polyps or chronic obstructive respiratory disorders. 
Has recently undergone major surgery.
Is dehydrated.

 
Side Effects
Like all medications, Nurofen for Children can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If your child experiences the following symptoms, stop use and seek immediate medical help:
Signs of intestinal bleeding:

Severe abdominal pain.
Black tarry stools.
Vomiting blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds.

Signs of rare but serious allergic reaction:

Worsening of asthma.
Unexplained wheezing.
Shortness of breath.
Swelling of the face, tongue or throat.
Racing heart.
Drop in blood pressure leading to shock.

If any of these symptoms occur, call a doctor immediately.
Severe skin reactions:

Rashes covering the whole body.
Peeling.
Blistering.
Flaking. 
Severe skin reaction, known as DRESS- rash, fever, swelling of lymph nodes, increase in ofeosinophils (a type of white blood cells).

How to store this product
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Do not use this product if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed. Once opened use within 6 months. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
