Noriday is a progestogen-only pill, a type of contraceptive pill that is sometimes referred to as the ‘mini-pill’. Unlike combined contraceptive pills, these types of pills do not contain oestrogen. The active ingredient in Noriday is norethisterone.

How Noriday works
Noriday contains the active ingredient norethisterone, which prevents pregnancy by thickening the fluid at the entrance of the womb, making it harder for sperm to travel through. It also changes the lining of your womb so that a fertilised egg cannot grow, and sometimes it can stop your ovaries from releasing an egg in the first place.

Directions
Always take this medicine exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Start taking Noriday on the first day of your period and use a barrier contraceptive (like a condom) for the first 7 days. Swallow one pill whole per day, without taking any breaks in between packs. You can take your pill at any time of the day, but it must be around the same time every day. If you are three or more hours late taking your pill, you may not be protected from pregnancy.

Side effects
Like all medicines, Noriday can cause side effects, but these won’t affect everybody. The following side effects have been reported:

Stomach upsets
Changes in your weight
Swollen or sore breasts
Headaches
Changes in sex drive
Migraines
Changes in appetite
Gallstones
A rash
Feeling tired
Feeling nervous
Feeling depressed
High blood pressure
Irregular periods
A liver disorder, such as a benign liver tumour

If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Serious side effects
Stop taking Noriday and tell your doctor immediately if you become jaundiced (your skin or whites of the eyes look yellow) or if you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction. You should also seek emergency medical attention if you notice any of the following side effects which could be warning signs of a blood clot:

You have a sudden, severe pain in your chest
You suddenly become short of breath
You have an unusual, severe or long headache
Your sight is affected in any way
You find it difficult to speak
You collapse or faint
Any part of your body suddenly feels weak or numb
You have a severe pain in one of your calves

Taking oral contraceptive pills like Noriday may slightly increase your risk of breast cancer. For more information on this potential risk, refer to the patient information leaflet.
