Omeprazole is a medication that can be used to treat symptoms of gastro-oesophagal reflux disease or GORD. It can help to manage the long-term effects of acid reflux and heartburn caused by an excess of stomach acid, which is common in patients with GORD or stomach ulcers. Available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg capsules, omeprazole can often treat or prevent your symptoms with just one dose a day.
 
How omeprazole treats acid reflux
Omeprazole is a type of medication called a proton pump inhibitor or PPI. These medications work by reducing the amount of stomach acid you produce, making it less likely that excess stomach acid will travel up your food pipe. This prevents symptoms of GORD, including acid reflux and heartburn, by tackling the cause of your discomfort directly.
GORD patients can also experience damage to their food pipe as a result of acid reflux, and this can be difficult to heal without managing further bouts of reflux. By reducing your stomach acid, omeprazole prevents further damage to your food pipe, giving the damage time to heal.
 
Directions
Your dosage of omeprazole and the length of your treatment will be determined by your prescriber during your consultation. This medication can be used for different conditions, including GORD and stomach ulcers, and the recommended dosage will change depending on your condition. Children and Adolescents
Children and teenagers can take omeprazole to manage symptoms of GORD or stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori. The dosage given to your child will vary depending on their age and weight and the condition being treated.

Side Effects
Like all medications, omeprazole can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of this medication include:

Headaches
Effects on the stomach or gut, e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, wind, stomach pain
Feeling sick or being sick
Benign polyps in the stomach
Swelling of the feet and ankles
Disturbed sleep or insomnia
Dizziness, sleepiness, a tingling sensation such as “pins and needles”
Spinning feeling or vertigo
Changes in blood tests that check how your liver is working
Skin rash, hives, and itchy skin
Feeling generally unwell, lacking energy
Fractures in the hip, wrist, or spine

Serious side effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects while taking omeprazole you should stop taking this medication and seek immediate medical assistance from your local A&E department or by calling 999 if necessary.

Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, e.g. swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, or body, an itchy skin rash or hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fainting or feeling faint
Symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, e.g. reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling, severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals
Symptoms of liver problems, e.g. yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark-coloured urine, tiredness

 
Warnings
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to omeprazole, any of the other ingredients included in this medication, or any other proton pump inhibitors (e.g. lansoprazole, esomeprazole). Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this treatment if you:

Lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
Get stomach pain or indigestion
Begin to vomit food or blood
Pass black or blood-stained poo
Get persistent or severe diarrhoea
Have severe liver problems
Are due to have a blood test
Have ever had a skin reaction after taking similar medications

 
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking omeprazole. This medication is secreted in breastmilk but it is unlikely to affect your child when you’re taking it at the recommended dose.
 
Driving or using machinery
Omeprazole is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machinery, however, there are some potential side effects that could affect your vision or judgement. If you experience any dizziness, changes to your vision (for example, blurred vision), or any other side effects that could affect your judgement, you should not attempt to drive or use machinery until you are absolutely sure that these symptoms have passed.
 
Food
You can take this medication with food or on an empty stomach. Omeprazole capsules contain sucrose, so you should speak to your doctor before taking this medication if you have an intolerance to some sugars.
 
Other medications
You should not take omeprazole if you are already taking nelfinavir, which is a medication used for HIV infections. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you are already taking:

Ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole or voriconazole, which are used to treat fungal infections
Digoxin, which is used to treat heart problems
Diazepam, a medication for anxiety, relaxing muscles, or used in epilepsy
Phenytoin, which is used in epilepsy
Blood thinners, such as warfarin
Rifampicin, which is used to treat tuberculosis
Atazanavir, which is used to treat HIV
Tacrolimus, which is used in cases of organ transplantation
St John’s Wort, which is used for mild depression
Cilostazol, which is used to treat intermittent claudication
Saquinavir, which is used to treat HIV
Clopidogrel, which is used to prevent blood clots
Erlotinib, which is used to treat cancer
Methotrexate, which is a chemotherapy medicine
